How to do well at an interview

Well done – youโ€™ve applied, youโ€™ve been invited for an interview, and youโ€™d really like the job, so here are some of our top tips for giving yourself the best possible chance to impress your prospective employers.

Assuming youโ€™ve checked all the details and are quite sure that you know where (in-person, online, or by phone) and when the interview is to take place, you can focus on what to do:

  • Find out as much as you can about the company by looking on their website.
  • Look again at the job description and think about what the interviewer might ask you about the role itself and why you want it.
  • Reread your CV and letter of application and think about answers showing how your previous experiences and strengths make you a suitable candidate.
  • Think of examples you can use to show how you have shown similar skills to those needed for the job and talk through your answers with someone.

If the interview is online, make sure that your computer is all set up and be ready to start around 10 minutes beforehand so that they donโ€™t have to wait for you.

If itโ€™s in person, make sure that you know how to get there well before you go and arrive at least 10 minutes early so you have time to gather your thoughts – and have the interviewerโ€™s contact details handy so you can let them know if youโ€™re delayed.

During the interview itself:

  • Take your time to listen to the questions before you reply, and donโ€™t be afraid to ask the interviewer to repeat or clarify if youโ€™re not sure.
  • Take the opportunity to ask some questions yourself (usually near the end of the interview) to show that youโ€™re interested.
  • At the end of the interview, thank them and if youโ€™d like to know, ask when youโ€™re likely to hear from them.

Good luck!
